Henry Koehler is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest living sporting artists in the world. His long association with the sporting life began soon after his graduation from Yale, when his illustrations appeared in The New Yorker, Town & Country and Sports Illustrated.
His first exhibition was in 1961 and since that time he has shown 58 times in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and throughout the United States. Racing and hunting come alive under his brush. He also offers us intimate, behind-the-scenes looks at jockeys, horses, dogs and the special accoutrements of each sport.
He has painted several portraits of well-known polo ponies on commission but prefers to capture ‘the flavor, sound and smell of polo’. He is unique amongst contemporary artists in being able to capture with such intimacy the world of the horse, not only on the hunting field and racecourse, but also in the boot room, jockeys racing, and in his sensitive studies of polo games & pony lines.
His loyal following of collectors has included Ralph Lauren, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Paul Mellon, John Hay Whitney, President John Kennedy, the Duke of Beaufort, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, the Duchess of Cornwall, Senator Edward Kennedy, Mrs. George Baker, the Duchess of Windsor, the Bancroft Family, The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales.
His works can be seen at the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and at the National Horse Racing Museum at Newmarket in Great Britain.
Since 1961 Henry Koehler has held over Sixty one man exhibitions, the majority being held in America although he has also exhibited in London, Paris, Johannesburg and Nassau. His paintings can be found in the National Museum of Racing, Newmarket and in numerous private collections throughout America and Europe. In 1974 he was commissioned to design the 10 cent US postage stamp to commemorate the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby, a subject he has painted on several different occasions.
Mr. Koehler currently lives and works in Southampton, New York.

Among the wide variety of animal sculptures by Isidore-Jules Bonheur (1827-1901) exhibited at the Salon* were a number of mounted equestrian models including three studies of jockeys on horseback, shown in 1864, 1879 and 1886. The most famous of these is “Le Grand Jockey” or “The Large Jockey”.
The work shows a victorious jockey patting his horse on the neck in congratulation. First exhibited in bronze at the 1879 Salon, it was awarded the prestigious Medaille d’Or.
LE GRAND JOCKEY (“The Large Jockey”) has been cast using the finest pure bronze.. It boasts a gorgeous patina finish applied under very high heat to fuse into the bronze itself.
The inscription BOUDET 43 Bd des Capucines, Paris corresponds to the editeur who has purchased one or more plaster molds from the original artist and has the rights to reproduce the sculpture in a variety of sizes. Boudet was known for ordering a variety of molds and versions of Bonheur’s works, which he would reproduce generally in more than one size. His name and address can be found inscribed along the base of his Bonheur sculptures.
Similar Bonheur sold in 2007 at Sotheby’s in London for $285, 035 USD
*Paris Salon (French: Salon de Paris), beginning in 1725 was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France
Between 1748–1890 it was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the Western world. From 1881 onward, it has been organized by the Société des Artistes Français.
Do remember these large casts are very difficult to find on the market today .
