Today, Frane Mlinar is considered a master of the Realist genre, a superb painter whose exceptional work is of an extraordinary high quality. His photo-realistic style is technically superb in composition and execution, creatively brilliant and remarkably distinctive. His rich, vibrant canvases delight and stimulate the eye yet at the same time are emotionally evocative and tranquil.
It’s not surprising that Mlinar enjoys an international reputation. His work has been widely reported in the media for more than a decade, including reportage in Art and Antiques and Architectural Digest, and exposure on CBS and CNN. His art has been exhibited widely in his homeland where he enjoys national recognition and his work is in the personal collection of the President of the Republic of Croatia. He has also exhibited in Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and throughout the U.S.
As much as Mlinar is patiently obsessive about detail, he is enthusiastically passionate about his color. His understanding and manipulation of it is exceptional, at times creating almost a three-dimensional effect. Sometimes, he’ll employ bold, strong, solid colors to draw the eye to a focal point of special interest. Other times, the color is gradually graded in subtle nuances of tone that at first may not be perceived. Only on closer examination does one became aware of its skillful effect on the overall composition. But perhaps more important than details of substance and artistic techniques, is Mlinar’s ability to subliminally communicate mood and atmosphere. There is a controlled calm and sense of quiet order to his work that communicates peace and tranquility. Mlinar’s paintings have an old world sense of reality that is grounding, comforting and reassuring.
For his work he received a Pollock – Krasner Foundation Award in 2008. Mlinar’s paintings can be found in collections throughout the World such as those of Francis F. Coppola’s Rubicon Estate in Rutherford CA, Mike Grgich’s Grgich Hills Estate in Napa Valley CA, Mott’s Juices Inc. in Stamford CT, the Collection of Mr. Burt Reynolds at the Museum of Burt Reynolds and Friends in Jupiter FL, President of The Republic of Croatia, Embassy of The Republic of Croatia, Washington D.C.
