American Contemporary

Donna Long was born in New York City in 1937 and traveled the world for many years as a photographer. Her photos of her explorations in such places as Nepal and the Andes have been featured in shows from San Francisco to Oxford, England. Remarkably, she picked up her first brush only in 2003, enrolling in a class at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Long’s background as a photographer is apparent in her compositional devices. Like Degas, who also chose horses as subjects, she focuses in, crops the view and freezes the action to mimic the immediacy of a snapshot in many of her oil paintings.

Long’s passion and love for horses stems from her childhood and for thirty years she trained horses professionally throughout the United States. She now lives and works in West Palm Beach. She frequently visits family members in California and, during a recent stay in the Napa Valley, began a new series of paintings depicting the landscape and livestock of the Carneros district.

Long has previously exhibited her paintings at Donna Tribby Fine Arts in West Palm Beach. She received the First Prize from the Armory Art Center Annual Exhibition in March 2005.  The exhibition, Donna Long: Paintings, will be on view at the Serge Sorokko Gallery, San Francisco June 21–28.  Her paintings will be exhibited at the Napa Valley Museum July 13–August 12 in conjunction with the second annual Festival del Sole, and travel to Cortona, Italy and Singapore for shows in August and October 2007, respectively.
