Rosalind M. Mercier is a graduate of Columbus School for Girls and The Ohio Sate University,  Her first career was as a makeup artist for films & television in Los Angeles for 8 years, followed by the BBC in London.  Mercier left makeup to pursue portraiture, in the footsteps of her great-grandfather who painted such dignitaries as Leopold II, King of the Belgians and Prime Minister Disraeli.  Mostly self-taught, she enjoys capturing the nuance of detail that makes each individual subject unique.

An early success while still in England was a commission for the Irish Guards, which was exhibited at the 1991 Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, with other works shown at the Chelsea Art Society.  Since returning to the U.S., Mercier has exhibited at the Columbus Museum of Art, the Ohio Art League, the Ohio State Fair, and the American Academy of Equine Art at the Horse Park in Kentucky.  Her work has been awarded several prizes and is in many collections, both corporate & private, including Capital Area Humane Society, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Columbus School for Girls, The Columbus Country Club, and Darby Dan Farms.

In 2011 Mercier achieved the additional honour of having one of her animal paintings join the Royal Collection of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall (Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla).  In a personal thank you note, the Duchess said she had hung the painting of a suffering donkey in her study at Clarence House to remind her why she is President of The Brooke Hospital for Animals, which runs clinics in the Middle East to help working animals.

Mercier enjoys a week each Spring as Artist in Residence at her alma mater, CSG, painting in situ and teaching the girls about art and life as an artist.  Many of her equine commissions come from being an Honourary Whipper-In with Rocky Fork Headley Hunt, which is probably the best part of being marooned in Columbus, Ohio.

Mercier works mainly in oil, pastel/charcoal or pencil – and says she’d get a lot more done if she weren’t always rescuing stray animals.

Commissions welcomed.  Work is most often created from the Client’s photographs, although the artist is happy to travel to meet with the Client/Subject for life-sittings and/or to take the photos.  Travel expenses and associated fees are borne by the Client.
