American Contemporary

A native Californian, Robert Schaar is a nationally-recognized painter whose representational style has been described as “deceptively loose and spontaneous.” He is well known for his portrayal of a variety of subjects including American and European scenes, as well as his colorful depiction of thoroughbred racing and golfing.

His work is on permanent exhibit in the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, Pentagon, NASA Space Museum at Cape Canaveral, U.S. Air Force Academy, Saudi Arabia Royal Air Force headquarters in Riyadh, and the Kentucky Derby Museum. A winner of many gold medals in juried art shows, Schaar’s brushy, colorful style is in great demand as he captures the essence and excitement of his subject matter.

In addition, Schaar is a highly-regarded portrait painter. His commissions include many government and private industry notables. He is one of an elite group of artists who comprise the NASA Art Program, with his work included in NASA’s “Vision of Flight” show, viewed in museums worldwide.

Schaar is a member and past president of the California Art Club and past Air Force Art Chairman of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. He received his training at the world-renown Art Center College of Design. Following the Korean War, where he served as a Navy staff artist, Schaar completed his art apprenticeship in Europe and Southern California. He immediately became a working artist and over the years has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting American artists of our time.

In 2009, after more than 20 years in the gallery business, Schaar closed his gallery, Schaar Galleries, allowing him to focus exclusively on his painting. His art studio is located in the beautiful seaside community of Dana Point, California.

Schaar is published by Winn Devon Art Group and the New York Graphics Society. Many of his images are available worldwide as limited-edition fine art reproductions.
