American Contemporary

Whether it’s landscape or portraiture, Pieter’s art is a colorful exploration of the play of light in the play of life, meaningfully captured in paint. His artistic background combines extensive color theory study with an academic foundation acquired at the Art Students League of New York. “My training is invaluable to me. It is the foundation for me to explore the multitude of ways I can approach my materials. It becomes the departure point for how I choose to interpret my subjects. As a result my process becomes deeper and I feel I am grasping life beyond appearances.”

Lefferts is well known for his robust landscapes featuring the Hudson Valley, the Berkshires, and Connecticut’s Northwest Hills, in addition to his life-long passion for New York’s Adirondack Mountains. His Adirondack art was among featured works at the 2000 Winter Goodwill games at the Olympic Museum in Lake Placid, NY. His work is in collections throughout the world.

During the 1990’s Lefferts traveled the world as Tour Manager for the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, providing him with encounters with legends of jazz and blues, and seeing first-hand the cultural treasures of Japan and Europe. Having grown up in a musical family it’s natural for me to bridge the relationship between music and art. They share the same language, the language of color. When I play music I am intensely involved with sonic color, as such, when I paint I am building on lyrical qualities in my visual compositions. He is a highly regarded art educator who has lectured at the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT on topics ranging from the evolution of painter’s pigments to a survey of the nude in American Art.

Also a portrait artist, Lefferts is available for commissions through the Chisholm Gallery.

His equine portraits are studies in strength and sensitivity. The public is invited to view the artist’s work and commission a portrait at the Chisholm Gallery in Pine Plains.
