Snaffles
Snaffles, born in 1884 and christened Charlie Johnson Payne was the son of a Warwickshire Shopkeeper. From a very early age he thought only of joining the army and his military experiences were the inspiration for many of his paintings. His sojourn in India and his obsession with hunting, combined with his unique ability to transferee humour and incident to his paintings made him one of the most sought after sporting artists of the 20th Century.
