Thea Kliros:

Knowing Looks & Tall Tales

Extended by Popular Demand

Thea Kliros was born in New York City and currently lives there, but spends much of her free time in the Millbrook area.

She studied art at Bennington College in Vermont and at the Yale University School of Art and Design in New Haven, Connecticut. She began her career as a painter and at one point worked on dioramas at the Natural History Museum in Washington, DC.

She then moved to Europe, lived in Spain and Switzerland for a number of years, continued to paint, occasionally exhibited, and gained experience as a freelance illustrator.

She returned to the United States and, until the late eighties, largely concentrated on fashion illustration. This work has appeared in numerous publications including Woman's Wear Daily, Vogue, Seventeen and Good Housekeeping.

Over the past decade, her focus has shifted from fashion to illustration of children's books and this has now become her particular field of interest. During this period she has illustrated many dozens of such works.

One recent award was a Best of the Year from the Please Touch Children's Museum in Philadelphia for the Greenwillow Harper Collins publication What Can you Do in The Rain?

Her work was featured in The Illustrators: The British Art of Illustration (1786-2003), an exhibition at the Chris Beetles Gallery in London, England. Later this year, her illustrations will appear in another exhibition at that gallery.
