MARY BRIDGMAN
American Contemporary
Mary Bridgman grew up in a farmhouse in Oakland, Maine. Hours were spent riding in the fields behind the house on her ponies. Her artistic inclinations appeared early through painting, drawing, sewing, singing and acting in high school plays.
Mary made her way to New York City and the Parsons School of Design via Connecticut College where she concentrated in Studio Art and was a Shwiff (she-whiffenpoof). After graduating from Parsons the artist worked as a women’s wear designer (most notably as a part of the Ellen Tracy design team) while continuing her studies at The Art Students League, The New York Academy of Art and The School of Visual Arts refining her skills and techniques.
Over the years Bridgman has travelled extensively to the continents of Europe, Africa, South and Central America, Australia, Indonesia, and the Islands of the South Pacific exploring different cultures and accumulating images. The artist's unique form of expression began to emerge after a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, and soon after to the Prado in Madrid which houses Goya's Black Paintings and Early Renaissance Icons. Portraiture being the main focus.
Bridgman has been a member of the Collegiate Chorale and sang with the group in performances at Carnegie Hall including Nabucco, La Gioconda, and Giovanna D'Arco. She began working with horses as artistic subject matter after volunteering to help Claremont Riding Academy backstage at the Metropolitan Opera House for performances of Carmen and Aida.
Mary continues to enjoy the horse as her favored form of transportation both in Central Park and in different parts of the world. Bridgman is on the Faculty at the Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology and resides in Greenwich Village.
